Handling Back Country Permit Quotas

Picking up and dropping off the permit quota spreadsheet. On Friday evenings, a USFS employee will print off a spreadsheet of the next two weeks' worth of Indian Peaks permit reservations. This spreadsheet will be placed in an orange box on the Arapaho Bay fee station (Figure 1). If the box is locked, the code will be the same as the code to the key box on Monarch cabin. This spreadsheet will need to be picked up Saturday morning by the Monarch cabin host and dropped back in the box by the Monarch cabin host on Sunday evening, except on Holiday weekends when it will be dropped off on Monday evening. A USFS employee will then pick it up on Monday morning and update USFS records.

Verifying available space: Using the information on the permit application, you will need to verify that there is space in the zones for the dates requested.

Fridays:

Call the USFS office at 887-4100. They will check to make sure that there is room. The permit cannot be issued until you have gotten in touch with the USFS.

Saturdays/Sundays/Holidays:

You will need to refer to the permit report for the quotas. See Sample.

Under each zone name you will see a total.  This is the total number of permits that can be issued for that zone per day.  Following over from that you will see 2 numbers for each date.  The top is the no. issued by Boulder, the bottom is the no. issued by the Sulphur range district.  The sum is the number of permits already issued for that day.   e.g.,   on the sample report, Crater Lake has a total of 8 permits that can be issued, and 6 have been issued for June 17th.  So 2 more are available.  The ones highlighted in yellow are close to full and the ones highlighted in red are full.

Only one large group (8-12) is allowed in a zone per night. If a permit for a large group in a zone has already been issued, the word Large will appear for the zone under the date.  Large+1 means that 2 permits of the total allowed have been issued, one is for a large group and one is for a regular group. Refer to the sample quota sheet for Devil's Thumb dates 19 and 20.

If a zone is full you can not issue a permit for that zone. The applicant must choose a different zone.

If you issue a permit please update the number issued on the report.

Also, if Junco has any wilderness permit request, they will radio you to see if space is available.  Follow the procedure above, and let them know if the zones are available or full for the date(s) requested.  If full they will have to ask the people to change their request and radio you back. If they issue a permit update the counts on the permit report.
