Backcountry Wilderness Ranger Program
“What do Wilderness Rangers Do?”
Volunteer Wilderness Rangers act as official volunteer representatives of the United States Forest service, engaging with the public, educating them, and promoting leave no Trace principles.
Volunteer Wilderness Rangers also document information regarding hikers and trail conditions, submitting reports to share their findings with the local Forest Service, community Chambers of Commerce and other partners. Each volunteer Wilderness Ranger is required to complete a minimum of two Patrols annually, with one being an overnight patrol.
“How do I become a Wilderness Ranger?”
All volunteer Wilderness Rangers go through the same training program and pursue the same objectives. Wilderness ranger training requires watching a couple hours of instructional videos plus a full day of in-person training. If you are interested in volunteering as a Wilderness Ranger, we’d love to have you join our Grand County Wilderness Group and Trail Program. Please email volunteer@gcwg.org.
